The office of the Southern Middle Tennessee Association of REALTORS® (SMTAR) is located at 304 River Road in Columbia, Tennessee.  The facility, built in 2004, is comparable to a brick home on the outside and a fully functional office on the interior.  Prior to the move in 2004, the office was located in a model home built by member, Bobby Collier.  Mr. Collier held Lifetime Membership with the Association until his passing.  The Maury County Board of REALTORS® was founded in 1962 and restructured in 1976.  In 1990, at the request of the Tennessee Association of REALTORS®, the board expanded its jurisdiction to include Marshall County, and the name was changed to the Maury-Marshall Association of REALTORS® (MMAR).  In 1998 SMTAR, at that time located in Lawrenceburg with jurisdiction over Lawrence and Giles counties, requested a merger with MMAR.  Their merge was successful and the name, SMTAR was adopted as a means of describing the new service area.  SMTAR continues to grow by leaps and bounds.  We now serve REALTORS® in Giles, Lawrence, Lewis, Lincoln, Marshall, Maury, Perry and Wayne counties with many members in the surrounding area.

Our organization isn't the only thing growing and changing.  In the beginning, listing information was exchanged between offices.  Later, the information was compiled in a book and delivered to each firm on a regular basis.  Then, in 1989, the Association adopted a computerized multiple listing service and began entering listings at the Association Office.  Now, listings are easily maintained at the REALTOR® office level using an internet database offered by RealTracs Solutions.  General listing data from this system is available to the public at RealTracs.com.  Most of the homes for sale in Middle Tennessee are right at your fingertips!

The current board of directors is comprised of  9 members plus SMTAR's Executive Officer.  The Board positions are President, President-Elect, Secretary/Treasurer, and Director.  The MLS Director, who may or may not serve on the SMTAR Board, serves on the board of the Middle Tennessee Regional Multiple Listing Service to represent members of our Board with regards to MLS issues.  Major business decisions are approved by the directors with much of the other Association business assigned to committees and Association staff.  Committees attend to such tasks as public relations, social planning, legislative support, and complaints, to name a few.  Association staff is currently comprised of the Executive Officer, an Office Manager and an Administrative Assistant.  Staff is responsible for daily office functions as well as receiving complaints and providing REALTORS® with easy access to tools of the real estate trade.  Such tools include information on laws and ethics and a secure and convenient way for members to show properties.

In 2006, SMTAR created a Scholarship Committee to review the feasibility of raising money to create scholarship awards for area high school seniors.  The Committee became the SMTAR Scholarship Foundation and awarded its first scholarships in the Spring of 2007.  Four high school students graduating in 2007 received a $500 scholarship each.  The Foundation upped the bar for the 2008 Scholarship and was able to award eight $500 scholarships.  They have high hopes that this Foundation will become more and more productive in the years ahead.

In addition to supporting the real estate industry, SMTAR strives to build a sense of community among its members.  We do our best to stay in touch with our members on an individual level and to honor/support them during personal life experiences when appropriate.  We are a safe haven for all of our members regardless of their needs, and consider them to be an important part of what we lovingly call "our REALTOR® family".  We offer many networking opportunities throughout the year so that our members can share the community feeling with one another.  This networking aids the growth of our industry in many ways, and often puts us in touch with new contacts.  It can also offer insights on ideas both old and new.  You never know who you will meet at one of our functions!
