The Books

Before computerized MLS, listing information, if organized, was often kept in a card file on someone's desk. Eventually it was decided that this information could be gathered and printed periodically into book form so that it could be shared among local REALTORS®. This was great for everyone, but listing information was often outdated by the time it reached the hands of the agents.

The Name

The Southern Middle Tennessee Board of REALTORS® was originally an association that covered Lawrence and Giles counties. This association requested a merger with the Maury-Marshall Association of REALTORS®. It made great sense to everyone to keep the name that represented our region so well. It was later that the name was updated to Southern Middle Tennessee Association of REALTORS®.

The Region

The SMTAR service region (jurisdictional boundaries) is within the counties of Giles, Lawrence, Lewis, Lincoln, Marshall, Maury, Perry & Wayne in Southern Middle Tennessee.

The MLS

RealTracs Solutions is a regional MLS that is currently working to provide services throughout the state of Tennessee and beyond. Currently, the primary listing region lies within Middle Tennessee.

The Leadership

SMTAR's current board of directors is comprised of  9 members plus SMTAR's Executive Officer.  The Board positions are President, President-Elect, Secretary/Treasurer, and Director.  The MLS Director, who may or may not serve on the SMTAR Board, serves on the board of the Middle Tennessee Regional Multiple Listing Service to represent members of our Board with regards to MLS issues.  Major business decisions are approved by the directors with much of the other Association business assigned to committees and Association staff.  Committees attend to such tasks as public relations, social planning, legislative support, and complaints, to name a few.  Association staff is currently comprised of the Executive Officer, an Executive Assistant and a Receptionist.  Staff is responsible for daily office functions as well as receiving complaints and providing REALTORS® with easy access to tools of the real estate trade.  Such tools include information on laws and ethics and a secure and convenient way for members to show properties.

The Scholarship

SMTAR's Scholarship Foundation raises funds each year via its Dollars for Scholars campaign and it's annual Golf Tournament. Scholarships are awarded each year to high school students graduating in May in one of our 8 counties.
